Her friends and family call her 'the gypsy'. She started travelling the world before she could even walk, and still finds it hard to stay in one place for long. The first time she left home was when she was eleven and went to school in France for six months. Since then, she has lived, worked and studied in Europe, South America, Asia and the US, and spent more time abroad than in Germany, where she was born. Although she has spent the last five years in the UK, and Ira's style is mostly influenced by her trips abroad and her love for surfing. She got her first board when she was 16 and loves to surf when she needs to clear her head. According to Ira, when she waits for a wave her mind is on a thousand different things, when she paddles for a wave it's only on a few things, and when she eventually catches a wave there's only one thing left: freedom. She tries to combine surfing with her research trips to keep a balance, for example, after spending a month in a refugee camp near the Thai-Burmese border last year, Ira spent two weeks in tiny village in Vietnam learning how to shape and repair boards (and almost lost a finger in the process). Travelling has deeply influenced her work: coming face to face with the impact of conflict made her realize how fortunate she is to have grown up without fear or want. This is also why she is currently doing an MSc in Global Governance and Diplomacy at Oxford University, specializing in conflict prevention, management and reconstruction. She hopes that, at some point, she can contribute to understanding and limiting the effects of conflicts, but reading and interviewing eyewitnesses about death, torture and rape is also one of the most challenging things she's ever done. She says she's "lucky to be surrounded by incredibly smart, strong, motivated, loving and supportive friends and family", who give her energy, confidence and inspiration. She loves trying out new things and I doesn't take herself too serious. Su familia y amigos la llaman 'la gitana' porque comenzó a viajar por el mundo antes de que pudiera caminar, y aún encuentra difícil permanecer en un lugar por mucho tiempo. La primera vez que salió de su casa fue cuando tenía once años y se fue a estudiar a Francia seis meses. Desde entonces Ira ha vivido, trabajado y estudiado en Europa, América Latina, Asia y Estados Unidos, y ha pasado más tiempo en el extranjero que en su natal Alemania. A pesar de que ha pasado los últimos cinco años en Inglaterra, su estilo es resultado de múltiples viajes al extranjero y su amor por el surf. Compró su primera tabla cuando ella tenía 16 y surfea cada vez que tiene que aclarar la mente. Según Ira, cuando espera una ola su mente está en mil cosas distintas, cuando nada para agarrar la ola su mente sólo está en algunas cosas, y cuando ella finalmente está sobre la ola sólo hay una cosa en su cabeza: el sentimiento de libertad. Ira trata de combinar el surf con sus viajes de investigación para mantener un equilibrio, por ejemplo, después de pasar un mes en un campo de refugiados cerca de la frontera entre Tailandia y Birmania el año pasado, Ira pasó dos semanas en el pequeño pueblo en Vietnam aprendiendo a reparar tablas (aunque casi pierde un dedo en el proceso). Viajar ha influido profundamente su vida: estar cara a cara con las consecuencias de conflictos la ha hecho darse cuenta de lo afortunada que es por haber crecido sin miedo o necesidad. Por esta razón está haciendo una Maestría en Gobernabilidad Global y Diplomacia en la Universidad de Oxford, especializándose en la prevención, gestión y reconstrucción. Espera que, en algún momento, pueda contribuir a la comprensión y la limitación de los efectos de los conflictos, aunque leer sobre y entrevistar a víctimas y testigos sobre la muerte, tortura y violación ha sido un proceso muy difícil. Ira dice que tiene "suerte de estar rodeada de personas muy inteligentes, fuertes y motivadas", que le dan energía, confianza e inspiración diaria. Le encanta probar cosas nuevas y no se toma la vida demasiado en serio.
