I met Astrid through Victoria, one of my favorite people on Earth. Astrid grew up in the north of Italy until the age of 6, when she moved to Brussels. After school she left to study in Paris at the Sorbonne where she did a B.A in Modern Literature and a Masters degree in Publishing Skills at the Paris 13 University. She moved to London a bit more than a year ago to do an internship in an imprint called MacLehose Press and liked the city so much that she never went back. Astrid thinks the biggest challenge faced by our generation is to overcome the disappointments caused by democracy, and finding a way to have ideals and be involved in public life. She thinks "our generation also needs to buy (and actually read) more books". She describes her personal style as "Uma Thurmans' in Pulp Fiction, without the dance floor moves." Astrid is one of the few people I've interviewed that is actually really happy as a publishing assistant at Saqi Books, a small publishing house with an incredibly rich list. She doesn't really see herself having a career outside the publishing world. If she was forced to change carreers, she would probably choose to do something related to art. Her favorite color is green, her favorite author is Julio Cortazar, her favorite book is "Against Nature" by Joris-Karl Huysmans, her favorite artist is Gustav Klimt, Lucian Freud or Bernini (she can't pick one), and her favorite song depends on her mood but she would probably choose "Judy in Disguise" by John Fred & His Playboy or "Disorder" by Joy Division. Her favorite films are Fargo by the Coen brothers and of course, Pulp Fiction. Happiness to her will come when she stops being so impatient. She has yet to find her favorite place on Earth. In her view, the two coolest things about London are "speakeasys" (secret bars), and Halloween parties. Two cool things about Brussels are that people always know where to go to have a good time - "your friends can only be in two or three places", she says, and vintage boutiques.
