The Mexican North

I am spending Christmas in Torreon, potentially the ugliest city in Mexico, but one that I happen to love the most. Most of my family lives in the North, and I think I associate dunes, desert and the region's industrial feel with great memories. Its a shame that the North of Mexico has been hit so bad by drug violence recently, as it has really affected people's daily lives and cast a shadow in one of Mexico's most interesting regions. The North of Mexico is a great example of what can be done with scarce natural resources and hard work, it holds a population that is blunt and effortlessly fun, and has landscapes and natural sites that are among the most beautiful in the world. The Northern coast is one of my favorites - it has some the largest populations of marine species, and it's an amazing place to do whale watching and eco-tourism. To honor my Northern roots, here's a Northern look: Tardan hat (although Tardan hats are actually made in the South), Zara coat and sweater, and PAAR Ulku earrings (available here).

Pasaré Navidad en Torreón, posiblemente una de las ciudades más feas de México, pero una de mis favoritas. La mayor parte de mi familia vive en el Norte, y creo que asocio las dunas, el desierto y la sensación industrial de la región con grandes recuerdos. Es una pena que el norte de México haya sido golpeado tan fuerte por la violencia del narcotráfico, ya que ha afectado realmente a la vida cotidiana de las personas y ha proyectado una sombra en una de las regiones más interesantes de México. El norte de México es un gran ejemplo de lo que se puede hacer con escasos recursos naturales y trabajo duro. Tiene una población alegre y divertida, y paisajes y sitios naturales que se encuentran entre los más interesantes del mundo. La costa norte es uno de mis lugares favoritos - contiene algunas de las mayores poblaciones de especies marinas, y es un lugar ideal para ver ballenas grises y hacer eco-turismo.
