What to see in Coachella 2014 - Day 1 of 3

Many were surprised when they heard Coachella tickets had sold out in less than 3 hours. Despite not having huge headliners as on previous years, Coachella 2014 will be full of "small" bands that in 2013 and in recent years have grown a lot. If you already bought your tickets and really don't know which bands you'll see, take a look at my recommendations for the first of three days of music and madness.

Muchos se sorprendieron al saber que los boletos para la edición 2014 de Coachella se habían agotado en menos de 3 horas. Aunque Coachella no cuenta con headliners tan importantes como en otras ocasiones, el festival está plagado de “pequeñas” bandas que en 2013 y años recientes han crecido rápidamente. Si compraron sus boletos y realmente no saben bien a quién ver, aquí les van mis recomendaciones para el primero de tres días de música y locura que tendrán lugar en Indio, California.

The Knife

This weird swedish duet, formed by Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer, will be touring in the US and Canada during april, additional to their Coachella 2014 participation. The Knife define their show as "disrespecting borders between digital and analogue, fake and real, professional and dilettante, star and cast" and some other comparisons that did not make a lot of sense to me, but that in the end, guarantee that it will be one of Coachella 2014 best shows.

El raro dúo sueco, formado por Karin Dreijer Andersson y Olof Dreijer, estará además de tocando en Coachella, dando una gira por Estados Unidos y Canadá durante Abril. The Knife define  su show como “una falta de respeto a las fronteras entre lo digital y lo análogo, lo real y lo ficticio, profesional y amateur, protagonistas y reparto” y otras más cosas que no hacen tanto sentido, pero que al final nos garantizan que será uno de los mejores actos del festival.


Broken Bells

Formed by James Mercer of The Shins and Brian Burton, better known by his stage name Danger Mouse, Broken Bells are about to release their second studio album named After the Disco, which has raised a lot of expectation, following their 2010 self-titled album. Broken Bells combines the subtleness in Mercer's voice with the prodigal production skills of Danger Mouse. Listen to their first single from After the Disco, which will be launched on February 4th.

Formado por James Mercer de The Shins y Brian Burton, major conocido como Danger Mouse, Broken Bells está próximo a lanzar su segundo álbum de estudio titulado After the Disco, que promete muchísmo, tras haber lanzado en 2010 su disco homónimo. Broken Bells junta la sutileza de la voz de Mercer con la prodigiosa producción electrónica de Danger Mouse. Les dejo el primer sencillo de After the Disco, que será lanzado el 4 de febrero, del cual seguramente también encontrarán una reseña aquí.



Chromeo

As it was said on last week's post, White Women is on of the most anticipated albums of 2014. By the time Chromeo puts a foot in Coachella's stage, the album will already be in stores and surely made many of us dance to its beats. Chromeo is not to be missed in this year's Coachella edition.

Como ya lo dijimos en el post de la semana pasada, White Women es uno de los discos más esperados de 2014. Para cuando Chromeo se presente en Coachella, seguramente el disco habrá salido a la luz y nos habrá puesto a muchos a bailar. No se pueden perder a Chromeo.


HAIM
The trio formed by Este Arielle, Danielle Sari and Alana Muchal Haim released their debut studio album in 2013, in spite of playing together for almost a decade now. The album was an immediate success. HAIM's performance in Glastonbury 2013 helped them to be on the first places of the BBC Sound poll and later signed with Jay-Z's management agency, Roc Nation. HAIM has been compared to Stevie Nicks and has been described as a fusion of new folk and 90's R&B. Definitely HAIM is a must see in the first day of the festival.

El trío formado por las hermanas Este Arielle, Danielle Sari y Alana Mychal Haim lanzaron en 2013 su primer álbum de estudio, a pesar de que tocan juntas desde hace casi ya una década y se volvieron inmediatamente en una sensación. HAIM tocó en Glastonbury 2013, actuación que les ayudó a estar en los primeros lugares de la encuesta de la BBC Sound, y que posteriormente Roc Nation, la firma de representación de Jay Z las firmara. HAIM ha sido comparado con Stevie Nicks y se le ha descrito como como una fusión entre new folk y R&B de los 90's. Definitivamente HAIM va a ser de lo mejor en el primer día del festival.


Jagwar Ma

The fast growing fame of Jagwar Ma is not to be taken for granted. The australian band has toured all over the world after releasing their debut album Howlin, which was classified by me as one of the best of 2013. Some of us had the privilege of seeing them in Trópico festival last december, and I will dare to say that they were one of the best live acts I saw in the entire year. If you have not listened to Jagwar Ma, I encourage you to do so. Their 60's electronic rock will certainly make you dance.

La fama que Jagwar Ma se ha hecho en tan poco tiempo no es poca cosa. La banda australiana ha recorrido el mundo tras haber lanzado su primer álbum Howlin, el cual fue clasificado arbitrariamente por mí, como uno de los mejores de 2013. Algunos tuvimos la oportunidad de verlos en Trópico, el pasado diciembre, y me atrevería a decir que fue de lo mejor que vi en vivo en el año. Si no han escuchado a Jagwar Ma, los invito a hacerlo. Su estilo de rock setentero electrónico seguramente los pondrá a bailar y en Coachella definitivamente no se los pueden perder.


Wye Oak

Wye Oak is a folk rock band from Maryland, formed by Andy Stack and Jenn Wasner. The band manages to mix a magical number of instruments with only two musicians onstage, and the only way I could describe them is as a one man band duet. Their melancholic folk melodies will fit perfectly with the time of the day they will be performing in the festival (I imagine it will be during daylight). Here's a live version of Civilians, one of my favorite Wye Oak songs.

Wye Oak es una banda folk rock de Maryland, en Estados Unidos, formada sólo por Andy Stack y Jenn Wasner. La banda logra producir una cantidad mágica de sonidos con tan sólo dos personas en el escenario, y no se me ocurre otra descripción para ellos que un dueto de one man bands. Sus melodías folk melancólicas encajarán perfecto con el momento del día en que tocarán (me imagino que será de día). Les dejo una versión en vivo de Civilians, una de mis canciones favoritas de la banda.
