I can think of two possible scenarios to explain the origin of Coldplay's new single: either Chris Martin became best friends with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, or he had a terrible life-changing experience that submerged him into a period of deep depression which led him to write a song like Midnight. Whatever the reason, the only certain thing is that I hadn't been excited by a Coldplay album since X&Y, maybe even A Rush of Blood to the Head. It’s been almost 10 years since Coldplay took, in my opinion, a wrong turn, and it seems they have finally left that joyful and danceable pop phase behind that began with Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. It feels like they have now returned to their origins (let’s hope). We can only hope Midnight is just the tip of the iceberg of what Coldplay has to offer this 2014. Podría pensar en dos cosas que expliquen el origen del nuevo sencillo de Coldplay: o bien Chris Martin se ha hecho gran amigo de Justin Vernon de Bon Iver, o tuvo una experiencia muy fuerte en su vida y está metido en una enorme depresión que lo ha hecho escribir una canción como Midnight. Cualquiera que sea la razón, lo único cierto es que desde el X&Y, si no es que desde el A Rush of Blood to the Head, no me había emocionado algo de la banda originaria de Londres. Casi 10 años después, Coldplay parece (y esperamos que sea verdad) haber regresado a sus orígenes melódicos y depresivos, dejando atrás la fase de pop alegre y bailable en la que cayeron desde el Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Esperemos que Midnight sea tan sólo una probada de lo que Coldplay tiene preparado para 2014. Por lo pronto les dejo el video de Midnight, dirigido por Mary Wigmore.
