SOHN - Tremors

Christopher Taylor, better know as SOHN, is a British musician and producer currently based in Vienna, Austria. SOHN released The Wheel and Red Lines about 18 months ago, singles that received critical acclaim from the media, including great reviews from The Guardian, Dummy and Abeano. About a year ago, SOHN was signed by 4AD, the british independent record label that also includes Atlas Sound, David Byrne & St. Vincent, Future Islands, Efterklang, Twin Shadow, and The National in their roster.

On April 7th, SOHN released Tremors, his debut studio album, which had raised lots of expectation after the release of his previous EPs and singles, which included Lessons and Bloodflows. The first time I listened to the album, I couldn't help but thinking of Apparat, the synths, the album's sombre mood, and mainly the irregular percussions, reminded me of Sacha Ring's 2011 The Devil's Walk. However, the more I listened to the songs, the more I realized that in spite of the album's dark atmosphere and of the melancholic and introspective lyrics, that could have easily made it a calm and sad album, SOHN adds voice samplings and faster beats that make Tremors a very easy to listen album and even on some songs like Light or Artifice, makes our heads move.

Christopher Taylor, mejor conocido como SOHN, es un músico y productor inglés que actualmente vive en Vienna, Austria. SOHN lanzó hace casi año y medio The Wheel y Red Lines, canciones que recibieron reseñas muy positivas de varios medios en Europa, incluyendo The Guardian, Dummy y Abeano. Hace un año, SOHN fue firmado por 4AD, la disquera independiente inglesa que cuenta con artistas como Atlas Sound, David Byrne & St. Vincent, Future Islands, Efterklang, Twin Shadow y The National en sus filas.

El pasado 7 de abril, SOHN lanzó Tremors, su álbum debut, el cual había levantado gran expectativa tras haber lanzado sus anteriores EPs y sencillos, entre los que destacaban Lessons y Bloodflows. Al escuchar por primera vez Tremors, no pude evitar en pensar en Apparat, los sintetizadores, el tono sombrío del álbum y sobre todo las percusiones irregulares que usa me recordaron mucho al The Devil´s Walk de 2011 del alemán Sascha Ring. Pero mientras avanzaban las canciones, me di cuenta que a pesar de que el mood del álbum es obscuro, y de las melancólicas e introspectivas letras, que pudieron fácilmente hacerlo un álbum triste y tranquilo, SOHN agrega sampleos de voz y ritmos más acelerados para darle un toque más movido que hacen que el álbum entero sea fácil de escuchar y que en ocasiones nos ponga a mover la cabeza como con Light o Artifice.
