The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Days of Abandon

Since Belong, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's sophomore album, the band has been evolving towards a more mature sound, while keeping the melancholic and romantic mood that has defined it. The musical evolution seen in Days of Abandon can be credited to the band's lineup changes - only Kip Berman and Kurt Feldman (vocals and drums), remain from the original band. Many consider the band's recent album to be Berman's solo project with collaborations, since he included Beirut's Kelly Prat, who has also performed with Passion Pit, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Coldplay, and David Byrne & St. Vincent; and Jen Goma from A Sunny Day in Glasgow, who as previous female singer of Pains, Peggy Wang, adds the subtle and tender touch to the band, and shows us in songs like Eurydice y Kelly, that she can not only sing along Berman, but can also lead the vocals in the band. As I mentioned on last March's post on Simple and Sure, the first single released of Days of Abandon, the band returns with their already characteristic noise-pop that since their new album won my attention.

Desde Belong, el disco de 2011 de The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, la banda ha estado evolucionando, teniendo un sonido más maduro, aunque conservando su humor melancólico y romántico que tanto la han caracterizado. En Days of Abandon, Pains ha visto una evolución musical, mucho en parte a que su lineup ha cambiado drásticamente desde su álbum debut homónimo de 2009, contando únicamente con Kip Berman en guitarras y voces y con Kurt Feldman en la batería. Muchos consideran que el más reciente álbum de la banda es más un proyecto solista de Kip Berman con colaboraciones, pues incluyó a Kelly Prat de Beirut, quien además ha colaborado con Passion Pit, Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Coldplay y David Byrne & St. Vincent; y a Jen Goma de A Sunny Day in Glasgow, quien al igual que la anterior vocalista femenina de Pains, Peggy Wang, le agrega ese toque de sutileza y "ternura" a la banda, y nos demuestra en canciones como Eurydice y Kelly, que no sólo puede acompañar a Berman, sino también tomar la batuta de las voces.

Como lo mencioné en el post de Simple and Sure, el primer sencillo que The Pains of Being Pure at Heart lanzó de Days of Abandon, la banda regresa con su noise-pop característico que desde su primer álbum me encantó.
