Wye Oak - Shriek

Since their 2011 LP Civilians, Wye Oak has shown evident signs of reinvention. As Jenn Wasner, lead singer, and now bass player in Wye Oak, "there is much more at stake than whether my feelings get hurt or not", referring to how their fans would react at their radical change of guitars for synths. Evolving radically since Civilian, which was filled with pop, folk and R&B rythmns, and Andy Stack's intense drumming, Wye Oak opted for deep and funk-esque bass lines, arrythmic drums and vocals that fill the synth created atmospheres, and that have been compared to Grimes and St Vincent, and established as one of the best in indie rock.

Shriek, released on april 29th, has created lots of expectations and fuzz around the band's live performances, and on the few that have already taken place, Wye Oak has managed to surprise the somewhat skeptical fans, who argued that without guitars, the band would be less powerful onstage. Desde Civilians de 2011, Wye Oak se ha reinventado. Como lo comenta Jenn Wasner, vocalista y ahora bajista de la banda, "hay mucho más en juego que el hecho de que lastimen mis sentimientos o no", refiriéndose a cómo los fans podrían tomar el cambio drástico de guitarras por sintetizadores. Cambiando radicalmente desde Civilian, que estaba lleno de ritmos pop, folk y R&B, y de las intensas baterías de Andy Stack, Wye Oak optó en Shriek por líneas de bajo profundas y funk-escas, baterías arítmicas y poco cuadradas y vocales que llenan perfectamente las atmósferas creadas por los sintetizadores, y que han llevado a que Wasner sea comparada con Grimes, St Vincent y calificadas por muchos como una de las mejores del indie.

Shriek, lanzado el pasado 29 de abril ha generado mucha expectativa en cuanto a sus presentaciones en vivo, aunque las pocas que han tenido desde el lanzamiento del álbum han sorprendido a los fans que se encontraban un poco escépticos, muchos argumentando que podrían perder fuerza en el escenario sin las guitarras de Wasner.
