Icono de la Semana: Lucie Cincinatis

Social entrepreneur, athlete, model and now handbag designer, Lucie Cincinatis is definitely one-of-a-kind. Born and raised in Belgium, she graduated from Columbia University while being one of the top European track & field hurdler and juggling with a rather busy social life in New York City. Upon graduation, Lucie got a prestigious job in private equity in New York City but recounts that she could not find any meaning to what she was doing on a daily basis: sitting in front of a computer, and looking at meaningless numbers. While the pay was good, she felt like she was wasting her youth and was not making any difference in this world. “One day, I quit, I was 23, I had no idea what I was going to do, but I just quit. Don’t do a job that makes you unhappy”, she told us. A few months later, in October 2013, Lucie got into a renowned fellowship program that sent her to work in education in Haiti. About going to Haiti: “I did not have any expectation, I often heard that “Haiti was the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere”, but I was not afraid, and I just went for it…I always liked discovering new places, cultures and languages”. While Lucie really enjoyed working with children, setting up arts and crafts programs in the slums, and saw that education was the “only solution” to get Haiti out of the current cycle of misery, she also saw the need for job creation in a country where 85% of the population is unemployed. As you can see on her Instagram, Lucie finds way to capture the beauty of Haiti, its arts, culture and people. She recently started a social enterprise, Jacmel & Co, and employs local female artisans to hand-make leather bags out of a fruit named calabash. With this project, Lucie's mission is to promote jobs, empower women and foster sustainable living. On the other hand, through her superbly crafted bags, she is also aiming to beautify Haiti and shape the current image of the impoverished Caribbean nation. Other little things to know about her: she is an avid hiker and skier, she loves Japanese and Lebanese cuisines and has traveled to more than 30 countries. She’s also a dessert person.

Lucie es emprendedora social, atleta, modelo y ahora diseñadora de bolsas. Nació y creció en Bélgica y se graduó de la Universidad de Columbia, en donde malabareó con su vida social en Nueva York y su carrera como una de las mejores atletas de Europa al mismo tiempo. Después de graduarse, Lucie consiguió un trabajo prestigioso en un private equity de Nueva York. "No pude encontrarle sentido a lo que estaba haciendo todos los días: estar sentada frente a la computadora, mirando números sin sentido", dice Lucie. Aunque su salario era muy bueno, sentía que estaba perdiendo su juventud y haciendo algo que no hacía ninguna diferencia a nadie. "Un día, dejé mi trabajo. Tenía 23 años y no tenía ni idea de lo que iba a hacer. Necesitaba hacer algo con propósito así que me dije a mi misma 'no hagas un trabajo que te hace infeliz'". Unos meses más tarde, en octubre de 2013, Lucie fue aceptada en un programa de becas muy reconocido y se fue a Haití a trabajar en educación. "No tenía ninguna expectativa, había escuchado que Haití era la nación más pobre del hemisferio occidental. No tenía miedo, solo me fui a vivir ahí. Siempre me gustó descubrir nuevos lugares, culturas y lenguas". A Lucie le encantó trabajar con niños, aunque se dio cuenta que la creación de programas de arte y artesanía en los barrios bajos, aunado a la educación, era la única solución para que Haití saliera del ciclo de pobreza en el que se encuentra. Lucie vio la necesidad de crear empleos en un país en donde el 85% de la población está desempleada. Como pueden ver en su Instagram, Lucie encuentra manera de capturar la belleza de Haití, el arte, la cultura y la gente. Recientemente comenzó una empresa social llamada Jacmel & Co con artesanas locales para manufacturar bolsas de cuero y calabaza. Con este proyecto, Lucie busca incentivar el empleo, empoderar a la mujer y fomentar una vida más sostenible. Por otro lado, a través de sus bolsas de impecable ejecución, Lucie busca promover Haití y dar forma positiva a la imagen actual de la empobrecida nación caribeña. Otros hobbies de Lucie: le encantan las caminatas y esquiar, le encanta cocina japonesa y la libanesa, ha viajado a más de 30 países, y es una persona "postrera".
