"Simplicity, good taste and grooming are the three fundamentals of good dressing and these do not cost money." - Christian Dior, The Little Dictionary of Fashion

Last Friday during lunchtime I went to one of my favorite bookstores and found an absolute gem: The Little Dictionary of Fashion by Christian Dior's. This book is a must for anyone who is interested in fashion, and has an interest in understanding dress codes and general fashion rules. These are my favorite Christian Dior fashion definitions so far:

Age
As far as fashion is concerned there are only two ages - girlhood and womanhood. (There are also grandmothers - but it is only necessary to dress as a grandmother if you have a certain kind of figure and lead a certain kind of life.)

Earrings
Except in the country I always like to see women wearing earrings. They give a nice finishing touch. They need not be very elaborate; in fact little gold ones, or pearls or single jewels make charming earrings. For evenings, of course, they can be much more ornate. I always ask my models to have pierced ears.

Hairstyle
Like everything which comes close to your face, your hairstyle is extremely important. And more important even than a hat or a collar because it is actually part of you. You can never take enough care of your hair, but by that I don't mean that I like a very elaborate hair dressing. I hate it.

Individuality
Until the time we are converted into robots - and I hope this time will never come - individuality will be always one of the conditions of real elegance. In this period of mass production you will always find in the great variety of what is offered to you, something which is really your type. Try to understand well what is your personality and never forget that individuality does not mean eccentricity.

Jewelry
Real jewelry is the highest point of great luxury. I always prefer the finest to the biggest. To wear a big diamond on your finger means only that you have a lot of money- it means nothing in elegance. I think the quality of the stones, the design of the jewel and the perfection of the workmanship, are much more important that the size of the stone.
